To track clicks Revinate will replace all links with a custom URL. These new URLs will redirect all traffic to the original destination. Revinate will track clicks (Up to 1000 clicks per user!) for the life of the event. Because the tracked links have no expiration, the links are often times much longer than the original URL. This will not impact deliverability.
Adhering to best practices, Revinate will set up all customers, who are on a dedicated IP, with a Branded Link (Your Domain). If on a shared IP, then our system will default to our shared domain (via from guest-message.com). Please reach out to your CSM or Revinate Support if you would like to set up your branding domain.
Issues with Link Wrapping: There are times when issues occur during the redecoration to the original link. The following are a few examples and possible solutions.
-
URL Fails to Resolve - This issue will only impact a small percentage of links contained within the message. When the link is clicked, and the redirect fails, a common issue can be related to the inclusion of nonsupport characters in an URL (Screenshot below - Source). There are a few additional characters that are problematic for our system ( ‘,). Since both these characters are in direct conflict with HTML code, it’ll often time produce a failure during the wrapping process. It is important to make sure that all characters adhere to best practices.
-
“Server IP address could not be found” - When the link fails to redirect and the user is prompted with an ‘IP Missing’ error (ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED). The issue will only take place on the customer’s corporate network (Screenshot below). When that happens, the issue is likely with their corporate firewall. "The firewall or security software you are using can block the network connection or the browser and thus creates DNS block error. Check the settings of your firewall and security software. You may need to unblock your browser and your network connection. Or you can try disabling your firewall or security software to see if the error is fixed.” - Source. The action item is to have the customer reach out to their IT team to have them troubleshoot the issue.
-
"NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID” - This security error is because when Revinate wrap's a link, for data reporting, it wraps it in HTTP(Non-Secure) style. This can cause a problem if the original link is https (Secure Link). The solutions, through Revinate, is to set up SSL Clicktracking. With SSL Click Tracking we will wrap the customer's links in https, and allow the click tracking data to take place while maintaining the customer's Link branding. This is necessary because Revinate will need to be presented an SSL cert prior to the update going live.
